AU History: Kyosuke Nanbu grew up in a military family, both parents serving with honors in the Steel Battalion. Both Earthkin possessing the Child of Unyielding Steel trait, his parents were decorated officers. It was only natural that Kyosuke would follow in their footsteps. Kyosuke joined the Steel Battalion himself when he came of age, and currently holds the rank of Lieutenant and is commander of the ATX Team, an Enlightened specialist team in the Steel Battalion. His call sign is Assault 1.

Kyosuke's service was notable for surviving situations that by all rights should have killed him. At one point, early in his career, when he was a cadet, he and his convoy came under attack while near the city of Sanctuary by an enemy, presumed to be Gigan. The attack was devastating, and of the cadets, only Kyosuke and one other young girl survived. Kyosuke himself, miraculously, was more or less unharmed but the girl was nearly dead. The city of Sanctuary took them in, and Kyosuke was released soon afterward.

Canon Personality: Kyosuke is a solid, stoic man. Having come from a military family, he's a dedicated soldier, fiercely effective and calm under pressure. He's comfortable taking orders and giving them, he works well with other soldiers, and he has a strong focus on objectives in combat.

Suffice to say, he's really bad at the whole "feelings" thing. Kyosuke is a man of deep responsibility, in times of trouble he's surprisingly empathetic. However, he has no real knowledge of how to express these feelings. Failure haunts Kyosuke, as does human suffering he has witnessed and was unable to prevent. For Kyosuke, the only way to move is forward, and when he sees a path he will press forward with incredible tenacity. Personal failure really sticks with Kyosuke, it can put him in a rather unstable state where he behaves erratically and can be quick to anger - something completely unheard of for him normally.

While seemingly eminently practical, Kyosuke operates under a somewhat different code than might be expected. Due to his experience with the other members of the L5 campaign, especially the SRX team that works under a much different code than the often harsh military guidelines, Kyosuke understands and accepts objectives that might endanger the core objective, such as rescuing an otherwise sympathetic enemy combatant. He's also a consummate gambler, Kyosuke himself admits he loves the long odds and gets a certain adrenaline thrill from risky situations. This, combined with his frightening combat skill, make him a dangerous and often unpredictable foe. Extremely scrappy, Kyosuke is the master of strange mechs and can bring out the full potential of some of the most troublesome machines.

On the battlefield, Kyosuke is extremely perceptive. He seems to have a sixth sense for foul play and trickery, and his propensity for gambling serves him well, allowing him to successfully call an enemy's bluff when they were threatening to use poison gas on some colonists. However, when it comes to interpersonal relationships, he's a complete dunce. He can be said to have the romanticism of a plank of wood, but such a comparison would be unkind to the plank. It's not necessarily that Kyosuke doesn't want to form bonds with others, and he's reasonably at home at the more fraternal comrade interactions, but in love he's utterly clueless. His inability to really express his feelings meaningfully hinders his ability to see and accept the feelings of others, notably Excellen who he almost doesn't understand until it's too late. He's the kind of person you really have to spell things out for. Preferably slowly ~~while wearing a bunny suit~~.

AU Deviation: As an Earthkin instead of a Mecha Pilot, Kyosuke is a bit different. Unlike in canon, he actually has inherent abilities that make him "special", in canon he is not a Psychodriver and is very much just a man with a lot of training and a giant robot with a huge spike on its arm. He is elite, but that was earned entirely through work and merit. In Brave New World, he is elite in no small part due to his inherent abilities. This, coupled with the presence of his parents who are not mentioned in canon at all, gives him a certain outlook. His gifts are to be used to help the people, which gives him something of a more outwardly devoted to the people. He also has an intense dislike for Gigas, as do most people within Caldera. Sanctuary he feels a bit... uneasy about. He stayed there a short time but it was very different, he's not quite sure what he thinks, especially with the recent revelation of the Homunculus program.

Also he's not all that great with Pokemon who aren't like him, i.e. stoic and lineface.

Canon Abilities: Kyosuke doesn't have any special powers aside from an almost unnatural degree of toughness and/or luck. He survives things that should kill a normal person, a trait generally only shared by the Boosted Child Arado Balanga. In Kyosuke's case, however, he's just a regular human through and through, aside from a connection to the Einst that saved Excellen in the shuttle disaster.

Enlightened Abilities: Child of Unyielding Steel, Steel/Fire Type.

Kyosuke's Enlightened abilities are generally fairly subtle. He will get stronger and tougher with each successive evolution, and the fire abilities are typically manifested by being able to charge explosive energy or heat into nearby objects, which he typically uses to enhance his attacks. Steel is his major typing, and it manifests in a sheer defensive power that allow Kyosuke to shrug off blows that would fell a weaker Enlightened. Kyosuke does have the ability to use his fire ability to create a powerful thrust behind him that lets him propel himself into the air or move at great speeds, he uses this to close distances quickly. As he evolves, he will also increase his carrying capacity, being more able to carry larger and bulkier weights without encumbering himself. Finally, he'll be able to generate steel plates around himself in his final evolution to further armor himself against attack.

Aside from that, Kyosuke also has an array of unusual weapons. He carries some claymore mines that explode into steel balls when thrown. On his right hand, he carries a Calderan weapon known as the Revolver Stake. This weapon has a large metal spike on the end mounted on a cannon with explosive rounds contained within it and a trigger where Kyosuke's hand rests. When he hits an enemy, he can trigger it to blast the spike into them, maximizing damage and piercing through most armors. On his other hand, he has a small autocannon that can fire a quick barrage of machinegun fire. The interior has a blade that can be flipped out, and Kyosuke can charge it with his fire typing to heat it up to the point where it can easily cut through most things.
